The team was selected from the refugee athletes currently supported through the Olympic Scholarships for Refugee Athletes programme. UNHCR has worked closely with the IOC as a partner for the last 25 years working together to support over 200,000 young people in sports programmes designed to improve their well-being and social inclusion in eight countries (Colombia, Democratic Republic of Congo, Jordan, Kenya, Mexico, Rwanda, Turkey and Uganda). The first-ever IOC Refugee Olympic Team consisting of 10 athletes had competed at the Olympic Games Rio 2016. The athletes have captured the attention of the world through their inspirational journeys and performances. Each one of the members is a symbol of hope and courage for the millions of refugees around the world.
