In need of a couple of days out of Tokyo, I took a solo trip to Shibu Onsen in the mountains of Nagano. The geothermal waters here are said to have healing properties, bursting out of the earth through geysers and funneled into the hot spring baths below. Outside of Japan's major cities, resorts such as this have changed little since Showa times and the end of the late 80'S bubble economy. The Ryokan (Inn) I stayed at, Andai-kan, dated back to the Meiji era. A wonderful place, it had seen better days, but I like the energy that exists in these spaces - what these wood and paper walls have witnessed. The physical and emotional accumulation of memories. Marie Kondo she don't. It sat between three abandoned Inn's that had fallen into disrepair, pre-COVID sign of the times. I visited 'Hell Valley,' which was more like heaven on this beautiful spring day; it's where the monkeys bathe in the hot spring pools. I needed to shoot a video clip of something I had remembered from my last trip here about five years ago, more of that to come. This video is a sequence of one-second clips in chronological order shot on my iphone.
