Pakistani artist and designer @MishaJapanwala's signature breastplates are more than art. “This is the reclamation of our bodies in art and how we want to depict them and what we want to say about them,” Japanwala says. “The art that we consume globally is so heavily focused on the perspective of men and their view of female nudity.”
The desire to subvert the male gaze motivated the artist’s thesis collection of wearable nude body castings. The collection was titled “Azaadi,” meaning “freedom” in Urdu.
Since then, Japanwala has been busy: After she graduated from Parsons, her thesis collection work was given a six-page spread in @Vogue España. She was also featured in @ジジ・ハディッド's Gigi’s Journal Part II, a special issue of V Magazine the model was called to guest-edit.
Her next goal is to be able to fund the production of more full collections. She’s found a niche for her art work—an indulgent and rebellious celebration of the female form. Tap the link in our bio to read more about her work. Photographed by @zay.ira
