Some actors, like Iwai Hanshirō V, specialised in female roles and they are frequently shown living their lives outside the theatre in feminine clothing.   The Museum’s collection of Japanese woodblock prints and illustrated books produced between 1600–1900 contains numerous important works that reflect LGBTQ themes.
