I was the only person out, and it was almost sunset. Kai whipped me in, the wind was blasting and the chops felt massive. I dropped down the face and everything felt like slow motion. The speed and the sight of the drop is the most vivid memory I have. When I kicked out I had the craziest rush of joy and excitement, and something about riding big waves felt exactly like what I was meant to be doing. Now I understand why my dad loves surfing big waves, and that experience made me realize that the big wave bug must be somewhere in my DNA! I have so much respect for the women who have been paving the way in big wave surfing, especially at Jaws, and have dedicated their lives to the sport. I’m in awe of them!
