Glenn Ligon is an American conceptual artist whose work dissects constructions of race, language, desire, identity, and the way in which narratives are circulated in the media. In "A Small Band" (2015), Ligon presents three monosyllabic words rendered in white neon tubes and paint. These words were uttered by a young Black teenager named Daniel Hamm, when he and his friend Wallace Baker were arrested in 1964 for a crime that they did not commit. Originally exhibited at the entrance to the Central Pavilion in the Giardini during Okwui Enwezor's 2015 Venice Biennale, the presentation in New York City mourns and memorializes the ongoing atrocities at the hands of police in America.
