Rahajeng Rahina Saraswati
Today I join my Balinese friends at @greenschoolbali in honoring Saraswati the Goddess of knowledge, music and arts, wisdom and learning.
On this particular traditional holiday, the Balinese people bring offerings to their books in their houses, while students celebrate it at school, usually in the morning, and the office-workers in their office. They will dress in their ceremonial attire and come together for communal prayer.
In the afternoon of Saraswati day, the Balinese abstain from reading or writing; at this time, the books, being the sources of knowledge, are blessed with offerings of fruits and scented flowers while being sprinkled with holy water.
Evening time people often observe ‘Malam Sastra’ where they read books, especially religious or spiritual books, in the comforts of their own home or in the temple late into the night.
Truly a time to reflect on a life surrounded by books—a life searching for knowledge and inspiration.
Grateful to be able to experience this beautiful tradition in Bali this year and what more than at school like no other The Green school. 📚
