Some artists whose work is exhibited in the show envisage unorthodox prospects that might exist in parallel or adjacent universes to our own: Takashi Murakami’s mushrooms that have gained consciousness and human physiology and Sterling Ruby’s oversize skulls of hybridized beasts that are at once familiar and extraordinary. Ariana Papademetropoulos visualizes flora that have assumed humanlike characteristics, while other artists depict human subjects who have gained supernatural abilities, as in Andreas Gursky’s fantastical photograph of Superman set in a dramatically barren landscape or Damien Hirst’s sculptural rendering of a standing female figure, composed entirely of silver, whose metallic skin is splayed to expose her internal anatomy.
