Today, President Biden rescinded the Keystone XL pipeline permit by executive order, fulfilling one of his campaign promises. We honor the role Native leaders and organizers played in securing this victory. For years, they have put their lives on the line to defend our land and water, and many have been arrested—as recently as this month. Thanks to President Biden for standing with our Native organizers. • The Obama administration previously rejected the pipeline project as contrary to conservation efforts and the fight against climate change. Trump, however, issued a presidential permit in 2017 that made it possible for the project to move forward. The Rosebud Sioux Tribe (Sicangu Lakota Oyate) and the Fort Belknap Indian Community (Assiniboine (Nakoda) and Gros Ventre (Aaniiih) Tribes) sued the Trump administration, the U.S. Department of the Interior, and the Bureau of Land Management for breaking laws during the process of issuing the permits, and to protect their land and culture, and the water supply of many people living in the United States. • In 2019, we partnered with @ParamountNetwork to tell the story of the threat the Fort Belknap Indian Community faced.
