Arriving home with a new plant after we promised ourselves we wouldn't buy more 😬 🌱
It's #NationalHouseplantDay and therefore the perfect day to take a closer look at Charles Cromwell Ingham's "The Flower Girl."
The subject of this composition, a young street vendor, may have been inspired by a painting bearing the same name by the Spanish painter Esteban Murillo.
She offers us a potted #fuchsia—a gesture emblematic of the goddess Flora, and a plant symbolizing frustrated love. 🥀
🎨 Charles Cromwell Ingham (American, born Ireland, 1786–1863). The Flower Girl, 1846. On view in Gallery 774.
