A shopper scythes through the bitter cold to reach a boutique on Red Square. These days, Marx and Lenin can’t compete with Dior and Armani for the hearts of the consuming class.

This photograph was the opening image from my exhibit “Moscow – Winds of Change,” at the Festival La Gacilly-Baden Photo in Austria, where more than 30 exhibits were shown in a beautiful outdoor setting around town.

Out of all the 2,000 images, this large-scale print (measuring 48 x 75 inches) was carefully dismantled and taken by thieves the night before the exhibit was to close. Should I take it as a compliment?
