I’ve been putting this one off. It scares me a bit to try to explain LOTP. Definitely the ‘darkest’ lyric on the album, maybe that I’ve ever released ha. It’s about wanting to be included so badly that you put your body and soul in harms way. It’s about more then that too, but honestly it’s hard to explain. The words do a more complete job. Based on my memories from high school, it was the last song written for Cape God. I wrote the original demo in LA with Jack of Jam City. I had a note in my phone. ‘I made so many friends last night while I was unconscious’ that I’d written some months prior, picturing an unconscious body being prodded, drawn on, lifted around etc. 😶⁣

Jack and I had a beat started that was loosely inspired by the tempo and loungey jazz drums of The Lovecats by The Cure. I started repeating ‘I was the life was the life of the party’ and kind of knew right away that this would be THAT song. ⁣

I spent most of the day writing the lyrics. The lyrics are two-fold and cannot all literally be applied to my actual experience. My memories which I channeled for this song are of being in and out of the hospital sick, struggling socially and being willing to get completely plastered at any time just to feel included. Riding the subway back to the suburbs pale and hunched over remembering the previous night and trying to figure out if I was in on the joke or if I was the joke. Probably not an uncommon story, except for the hospital part. ⁣

Anyway, I took that sense of denial and confusion and tried to translate it to the lyrics. Making sure everything had a double meaning. That the narrator (me) is working it out and putting the pieces together as they go. That on first listen, you think you’re listening to an upbeat song. The repeated ‘Iwasthelifeeasthelifewasthelife...’ seems to morph into other phrases ‘I was alive’ ‘I was the love’. Some of the storytelling I did in this song was a tribute to others similar experiences that involved other forms of abuse. I wanted to include them in the confusion and lament of this song. I brought this demo to Stockholm and finished with Oscar and that’s the end of the story. ⁣
