As a contemporary choreographer, how do you position yourself in terms of that tradition? Damien Jalet: "I like to think that gender is a notion that transcends the biological aspect. Recently, at the Vigeland Museum in Oslo, we reworked Les Médusées, a trio that I’d created in 2013 and that inspired the piece presented in Suspiria by Luca Guadagnino. (...) Seven years later, we were presenting this new version, written for twelve dancers, for the first time. A dancer came along to the casting. His androgyny made him fascinating. It would’ve been ridiculous for me to say to him “you can’t do it because you’re a boy”. It all felt so right; it was clear that he should be part of the group."
