Artist Vera Lutter uses one of the oldest optical technologies still in use, the camera obscura, to create ethereal, otherworldly images.

Here's how it works:
Imagine a dark room with a curtained window. Light from outside travels through a tiny hole in the curtain, projecting the outside image on a wall in the room. The image appears upside down and in reverse because when the light enters the tiny hole, the light rays intersect. By building room-sized cameras and placing unexposed photo paper across from a pinhole opening, Lutter has adopted the camera obscura as her singular working method, but not all camera obscuras are large! They can be as big as a room or small enough to fit in your hand.
