Skin purging is when your skin reacts (usually with a breakout) to a new skincare product that’s loaded with active ingredients that increase skin cell turnover (often AHAs, BHA, or retinol). Here’s the thing: Everyone’s skin is different, so while some people may introduce active ingredients to their routine without any negative reaction, others may experience breakouts for weeks at a time. Why? Active ingredients like AHAs and BHA break down dead cells on the surface layers of skin and penetrate to do the same within the pores, and retinol can cause surface cells to shed faster to make room for the healthier cells to come to the surface (cell turnover). Purging can mean the product is working to get the bad stuff out of your skin. However, if you think it’s a breakout and not a purge, there are a couple of things to consider: Common irritants found in many personal care and beauty products could be causing the breakout. We suggest taking a closer look at the ingredients you are using and avoid what we call the suspicious 6—essential oils, drying alcohols, silicones, chemical sunscreens, fragrances/dyes, and SLS—which we have found to be at the root of many skin issues we see. If your routine is free of the suspicious 6, take a look at how you’re using moisturizers, as you could be giving your skin more than it needs. Overuse of moisturizing products is another common issue we see that for some can lead to congestion and clogged pores. Have a skincare Q for us?
