#GagosianDeitch: "The Future," the sixth in a series of annual thematic exhibitions presented by Gagosian and Jeffrey Deitch, is live at gagosian-deitch.com.

While the concept of the future often conjures visions of unforeseen changes to our present landscapes, typically corresponding with advancements in technology, many artists whose work is exhibited in this exhibition contemplate a model of futurity in which time is suspended. This is represented in artworks as varied as Piero Golia’s perpetually spinning roulette wheel that maintains a speculative projection about a “winning number” without resolution, Mehdi Ghadyanloo’s rainbow-colored depiction of a labyrinthian playground contained within a boxlike space, and Peter Halley’s silver metallic prison-grid painting that makes reference to concepts of restriction and confinement.

Other artists, such as Katharina Grosse and Adam McEwen, explore the painting’s potentiality to complicate the model of time as an irreversibly successive progression. For Evan Holloway, the concept of suspended futures is embedded in both his working process and the final composition of his sculpture, which incorporates materials and forms from past projects in its depiction of six faces stretching outward from a shared connection point.
