During that time, Black Americans were not allowed to use or carry guns in the navy, and so Dorie was never trained to use one. The expectation was that Dorie would never get above a messman level.   On the morning of the attack, Dorie was doing laundry when he heard the alarms go off on the ship. He headed to the deck where he began to immediately tend to the wounded, carrying them on his shoulders and bringing them to safety.   Dorie then proceeded to take over the anti-aircraft gun despite having no weapons training. "It wasn't hard. I just pulled the trigger and she worked fine. I had watched the others with these guns. I guess I fired her for about 15 minutes. I think I got one of those [Japanese] planes. They were diving pretty close to us."   He was the first Black American to be awarded the Navy Cross (second highest decoration for valor after the Medal of Honor). He was also awarded the Purple Heart.   Two years after Pearl Harbor, Dorie was serving on the USS Liscome Bay in the Pacific when it was struck by a torpedo from a Japanese submarine. Dorie was among the 644 men who lost their lives.   In 2020, the U.S. Navy announced that their next carrier would be named the USS Doris Miller.
