The Cyrus Cylinder has been described as the ‘first charter of human rights’.

It was inscribed in Babylonian cuneiform on the orders of Persian King Cyrus the Great after he captured Babylon in 539 BC, and was written to be buried in the foundations of the city wall.

The object reflects a long tradition in Mesopotamia where, from as early as the third millennium BC, kings began their reigns with declarations of reforms.

Find out more about this fascinating object via the link in our bio.

While we’re working hard to reopening our galleries, you can pay a virtual visit to Room 52 to see the Cyrus Cylinder object on display with @googleartsculture on Street View.
