Inspired by the resilience of aviation design – in 1937, the founder's son, Richard Morszeck, introduced aluminium into RIMOWA's manufacture for the very first time. However, it wasn't until 1950 that the first luggage featuring the hallmark aluminium grooves was produced. Made of pressed cardboard covered in a "thin aluminium skin", those early grooved cases – like this Suitcase No. 201 – were crafted with a stronger more resilient aluminium alloy made with copper and magnesium called duralumin.

Characterised by a delicate appearance enhanced by its rounded contours, this first grooved aluminium collection lacked an exposed metal frame making the design extremely lightweight – one of the most lightweight designs ever produced by RIMOWA. A nod to the cases' provenance, thoughtful details like the faux stitching embossed on the case's handle nostalgically recall the leather accents of only a decade or two prior.
