Citizen scientists have helped discover a new feature of the aurora-like STEVE phenomenon — one that may help scientists understand what causes it.

STEVE, short for Strong Thermal Emission Velocity Enhancement, appears as a purple ribbon of light in the sky with a green picket fence structure underneath. Its discovery — published in a scientific journal in 2018 — was thanks to reports by aurora chasers and citizen scientists who had noticed the unusual sight.

Now, new research details another aspect of STEVE discovered by citizen scientists: tiny streaks of light within the green picket fence structure. Studying these streaks could help scientists learn more about the magnetic and particle processes that cause STEVE to appear in the sky.

This photo was taken on July 17, 2018, at Little Kenosee Lake, Saskatchewan, Canada, showing the tiny green streaks below STEVE.
