Sufism is the mystical element of Islam, with sufis first coming to Sudan in the sixteenth century. Sudan has one of the largest Sufi communities in the world, and a popular saying goes: "If there is a family in Sudan that does not have at least one Sufi member, it is not Sudanese." The dervishes also played an important role in last year's revolution, joining the protests in what some consider to be a turning point.
