On Thursday, Poland’s equivalent to the Supreme Court ruled to outlaw abortions due to fetal defects, making the country’s ban on abortion almost total and sparking protests from pro-choice activists in Warsaw.

As of now, Poland will only allow abortion in cases of rape, incest, or danger to the pregnant person’s life, making the country one of the most hostile places in Europe for reproductive rights. In response, protestors came out in droves in Warsaw to voice their dismay at the new ruling. An image by artist Szymon Szymankiewicz, which depicts the country’s outline as a coat hanger (traditionally a symbol of the life-threatening risk posed by outlawing abortion), is also being shared widely online, as is the hashtag #piekłokobiet, or “Women’s hell.”
