In the Late Classic Period Yaxchilan was one of the most powerful Maya states along the course of the #UsumacintaRiver. (Slide 2)  . He is a descendant of these people and speaks #Ch’ol one of the 7 languages of the #Chiapas #Mayans (there used to be up to 95 #Mayan languages in the area)  . The language of trees is universal and sacred to the #Mayanpeople. For the #Maya, trees were essential for life, they had a profound respect for them, and they attributed religious and cosmological qualities to them. Today many are still considered sacred. The legends and customs that circulate around trees are a lasting part of the culture till this day.  One of the most important trees is the ceiba, or yaxché, a sacred tree to the Maya, symbolizing life and fertility.
