This scope of possibility is a motivating force within my work as a trend and concept designer at Banana Republic. Each season I have the privilege to ideate and strategize on what our future collections will look like. Primarily through images, season by season we work to transport the designers and team leads to the future, and to craft a vision of what will be. It’s quite beautiful to imagine, to be in this space where we can dream about what a new season will look like, feel like, and what lives our customer might lead in them. This creative direction is some of the highest levels of inspiration that kick-off the season, motivate, and act as a North Star for teams, and for me it’s crucial that within this imagery black people not only be included but centered as we concept our vision for the future. In the same way that I concept and forecast for the future of Banana Republic, in my personal life and work as an artist, I am constantly thinking about the ways in which Black lives are cared for and imagining the ways in which Black futures not only exist but thrive. When we organize around black people it is usually around death events. But more care must be extended to Black people not only in death; but also, in the dynamic ways we live our lives. This care is key to Black people being and feeling safe and this safety is the minimum of what is needed in order to self-actualize into thriving futures. How do we collectively concept a future and imagine worlds where all black lives are cared for? In a country that is built on slavery, genocide and theft this is a radical query we must meditate, action and fight for as our collective liberation depends on it."
