As a Nepali, born in Singapore, my heart will always be in Nepal, and my soul in India where I grew up. But it is in America, here in New York, where I fully came into my own. Where I truly became ME. This country embraced me, gave me the wings to soar & made me realise that my “impossible dreams” can be a reality. It gave me an identity. It saw me the way I have always seen myself: one of utmost worth. However, this country is not one without its flaws. We have read about it in the past and witnessed in the present. The heartbreaking social justice cry for the marginalised groups is real. The struggle of the unseen and those not cared for by our leaders is tremendous. As an Asian man, more often than not I have been at the receiving end of micro agressions and racism that have tried to dim my light or invalidate my existence. But, the beauty of this country is its first amendment. That I am allowed the platform to speak out against all the injustice that I have faced, as well take a stand for the many others who have faced even worse. Yes, the progress is at a snail’s pace and can be frustrating. However for me to be able to see and exercise the freedom of speech is truly remarkable. One that I am genuinely grateful for because when I look around the globe there are so many places where the voices of the citizens are muzzled. Therefore I take my civic duties with utmost sincerity and responsibility. To make sure that mine and my community’s voices are heard, and that we are seen - because I know what it feels like to be invisible. I find hope in many places, but the one that sticks with me most is the feeling I get when I see people being their most authentic and engaged selves. It brings me so much joy and fills me with optimism. And optimism and hope is the first step towards resistance. And... that is why I #vote. xPG」10月4日 23時41分 - prabalgurung
