ON A PEDESTAL. We love to elevate unique pieces, like this Classical-style statue that I found at a flea market in Paris, and now stands proudly in a private home in Washington. Creating a custom travertine table as a base not only allowed us to physically upraise the sculpture, but provide a modern contrast to the figure while complementing its materiality. As a backdrop, we commissioned a handmade wallpaper from @porterteleo in similarly neutral tones, but patterned to offer a more youthful counterpoint to the antique. The statue is tucked below a grand staircase in a house first designed by prominent midcentury architect Arthur Loveless – who was behind many impressive estates in the Seattle area. Added as part of an addition during a gut renovation of the home, the prominent staircase sweeps around a foyer space, drawing the eye to the stone figure, and features a railing I designed as an homage to Loveless. Double-height windows behind look onto the garden and frame the natural beauty of Mercer Island, while illuminating the bespoke wallpaper. A harmonious meeting of old and new. XK
