“Why didn’t you get up when the bus driver asked you?” When Claudette Colvin was asked what inspired her to stay seated when she was arrested in 1955—at the age of 15—while riding a bus in Montgomery, Alabama, she talked about Harriet Tubman and Sojourner Truth, women she had learned about in school.

This year, Claudette Colvin’s activism will be a central part of our National Youth Summit, where we’ll be exploring teens’ resistance to systemic racism. What will Colvin’s story inspire?

Learn more about Claudette Colvin in our student guide and join our summit discussion on Tuesday, September 22. Educators and caregivers: follow the link in our bio to register and receive all the materials you need to bring the summit into your classroom or home next week: http://s.si.edu/nys
