Today marks the 75th anniversary of Victory over Japan Day (V-J Day), when Japan formally surrendered to the Allied forces, marking the end of World War II.
A few weeks earlier, on August 14, 1945, as word spread throughout the nation of the surrender, Americans of all ages amassed in the streets to celebrate—the deadliest and most destructive conflict in recorded history was over.
The New York–based photographer #Weegee, aka Arthur Fellig, was on hand to capture the raucous festivities that overtook the city, from Chinatown to Times Square. Here, American servicemen react to the news.
