“...You have tv programmes where they kept showing you how they are sanitizing the airplanes and the airports and there are these flights bringing Indians back from outside...and at the same time hundreds of millions are walking home with no place in the imagination of this administration . So, the separation of the flying classes (if you like) and the walking classes and the idea that now poor people are being seen - even though corona virus was brought through the airways, brought by the elite into places like India - but now the elite are looking at the poor working class, walking class, as a bio hazardous body, not difficult for a country that practices caste, that thinks of people as untouchable, that the traditions of that hierarchical thinking, but now you have not just caste apartheid but class apartheid...and what is going to happen to this huge mass of people who are now unemployed slowly slipping into oblivion”.

Speaking via zoom #ArundhatiRoy discussed her new book of essays #AZADI at the Edinburgh International Book Festival @edbookfest The slogan of the struggle in Kashmir for what Kashmiris regard as the Indian occupation, ‘Azadi!’ is the Urdu for ‘Freedom!’. It also became a chant on the streets of India against the project of Hindu nationalism.

In the light of the COVID-19 outbreak, freedom has, Roy says, taken on another meaning and in a new book of essays she invites us to see the pandemic as a portal between one world and another. Here, she argues, is our opportunity to imagine a better future.
.
From one of the essays, THE PANDEMIC IS A PORTAL :
.

“Historically, pandemics have forced humans to break with the past and imagine their world anew. This one is no different. It is a portal, a gateway between one world and the next.
We can choose to walk through it, dragging the carcasses of our prejudice and hatred, our avarice, our data banks and dead ideas, our dead rivers and smoky skies behind us. Or we can walk through lightly, with little luggage, ready to imagine another world. And ready to fight for it.” ✊🏿✊🏾✊🏽✊🏼✊🏻 Powerful words by author #ArundhatiRoy @browngirlgang Published in @financialtimes
