10 year old @roseclimb on her first trad lead King Bee Crack HVS in some exhilarating wind! At one point I thought she might get blown off! She top-roped it first to learn some of the placements and for the lead I helped her out whilst hanging on a static rope next to her. Some call that cheating, I call it learning. Someone actually came and told us off for top-roping, I won’t name names or bore you with the details. But here is the message from me: there are no rules in climbing other than don’t ruin the experience of others and don’t harm the environment. You don’t have to follow the guide book or colours down the wall, you don’t have to follow outdated ethics unless you want to and you don’t ever have to justify what you’re doing because that’s not the way others like to do it. Don’t be afraid to break some British trad ethics if it helps you learn. It’s obviously admirable to ground-up onsight climb as a personal challenge but we all have to start somewhere and if it’s OK to top-rope an E9 then it’s elitist to say you can’t top rope a HVS. I tried to tell Rose that trad climbing isn’t always this windy and not all trad climbers are that unreasonable. She said she would have soloed the route if it wasn’t so windy. 🤦‍♀️ Next time we’ll have to challenge her a bit more! Well done Rose, you’re the future of climbing 😜 #oldguardgohome
