With a history that can be traced back over 1,000 years, the kimono is a traditional Japanese garment, and the national dress of Japan. While the shape of the garment was universal, its color, pattern, design motifs, and fabric quality were used to signify a person's age, gender, and social status.

During the Meiji period (1868-1912), when this child's kimono was made, Western technologies like synthetic dyes and fabrics began to be incorporated into the fabrication of kimonos, making bright colors and more intricate designs more widely available.
