Scientists have unlocked the mystery behind auroral beads with the help of a NASA mission.

Researchers used data from the @NASA THEMIS spacecraft along with powerful computer models to uncover the processes in near-Earth space that create auroral beads, a special type of aurora that drapes across the night sky like a glowing pearl necklace. They found that vast fingers of plasma in Earth’s magnetic field can stretch down to our planet’s atmosphere to create the auroral beads.
