Having spent the closing weeks of Jeff Wall’s first Gagosian exhibition in the hosting Chelsea gallery, I realized that what at first seemed a powerful gathering of recent images, was in fact a profound, lyrical, and coherent meditation on the nature of paradise. Some subjects were instantly apparent. Elaborately staged in a celebrated Italian garden, Wall’s great cinematic triptych 'I giardini' was explicit. Paradise lost indeed. So too was the astonishing image of paradise regained, 'Recovery.' This glorious panorama, filled with photographic and painted paradox, evoked earlier arcadias of Gauguin, Seurat, and Titian. Memories of childhood represented other kinds of paradise, both found and lost—found in 'Parent child'’s sun-filled street scene, and lost in the mystery and imagination of 'Mother of pearl.' The rules of the game become clear.
