This captivating short film presents the bustling theater of New York City life, where “every human is a poet, a masker, a warrior, a dancer.”
Filmed in East Harlem just after the end of World War II, “In the Street”—directed by renowned photographer Helen Levitt, in collaboration with Janice Loeb and James Agee—is a dynamic, tender, and often funny portrait of city life.
#FunFact: This short was a favorite of American actor Charlie Chaplin, who was allegedly so inspired by one of the children dancing that he immediately jumped up to mimic the toddler’s sweet moves.
This edition of the film is accompanied by a new musical score, written and composed by Ben Model (@silentfilmmusic).
