Le thème est une méditation sur la Force vaincue par le Temps, mais aussi sur l'orgueil de l'Homme. - 💪 Athlète grec plusieurs fois vainqueur aux jeux olympiques et pythiques, Milon vieillissant voulut tester sa vigueur en fendant un tronc d'arbre déjà entrouvert. Sa main resta prisonnière et il fut dévoré par les loups. Puget remplace ceux-ci par un lion, animal plus noble, et créé une composition d'une théâtralité baroque. - 🦁 Le sculpteur n'idéalise pas la représentation du héros et substitue à la sérénité antique l'expression véhémente de la souffrance. Les griffes du lion s'enfoncent dans la chair, les muscles se tendent, les veines saillent.
