It was rare that I saw a face that looked like mine, or heard of someone Black on the masthead. I didn’t know I could do what I’m currently doing as a career because I didn’t see any Black women doing it. Fashion is historically something that was for the elite and in many ways, it is still that way. I worked at The Gap in college, and after graduating, started my career in advertising and design. When I moved to California, I dreamed of working at one of the Gap brands to merge my love of design and fashion, even though I had no experience on the corporate side. It took time, and during that time I dealt with my talent being questioned, passed over promotions, and other covert (and overt) racism, but I also worked hard to achieve that dream. I’m proud to have accomplished so much, but there is much more to be done. Black Americans have $1.3 trillion in buying power, yet are underrepresented in areas like fashion, beauty, and design. Brands don’t have enough Black people in their offices, magazines don’t have Black editors. It’s uncomfortable being the only one in the room, yet I’m so proud to be a Black woman in the room. While I’m here, I’m committed to do all I can to make sure as a brand we being more inclusive in who is in our marketing, and as a manager, to lead with pride and purpose, mentor and lift up other Black talent, and use my platform as a force for good." @kimair • Art Director, Banana Republic Factory」7月3日 4時02分 - bananarepublic
