#GagosianSpotlight: “Fruit, I believe, is for Fischer a way to bring history to its knees.”
—Francesco Bonami
In his expansive and protean oeuvre, Urs Fischer has returned time and again to the subject of food, as a fundament of everyday life and, conversely, as an art historical signifier of ephemerality and mortality in the grand tradition of the “vanitas.” Like sixteenth-century Italian painter Giuseppe Arcimboldo, Fischer employs the motif of fruits and vegetables in portraiture. In a video for “Gagosian Quarterly,” curator Francesco Bonami reflects on Fischer’s use of produce throughout his oeuvre. Follow the link in our bio to watch the video.
