If you don’t speak up for things that matter what did you really do? I’ve been having conversations with friends and family all week about what’s going on in the world, and I must say, as hard as it has been, it is long overdue. For decades, racism against blacks was the elephant in the room, now we’re all finally acknowledging it and talking about how to do better by minorities in this country. When I was 10 I watched my mom get arrested at a YMCA in Maryland. She pulled up in her Chevy suburban, with a car full of excited kids, and before I knew it she was being cuffed and put head first into a police car. I remember crying and turning to my brother and sisters for comfort, because when you’re ten you think she’s never coming back. My mom had never been arrested before and had no criminal record. She was a housewife raising 4 kids while my dad worked long, 10-12 hour days. The only thing that my mom was guilty of was disagreeing with a white police officer. She later went on to sue that police department for her wrongful arrest. I’ve witnessed racism for years in my own family, and yet everytime I saw another black person killed by police, I didn’t speak up on my Instagram account because I thought “don’t people just want me to stick to fashion”? I also learned years ago to keep my social media presence “light, bright and polite” and I’ve done that for 8 years. But now, I think it’s more important to keep it real. Have real conversations. Talk about your struggles, stand up for what you believe in, shine light on important issues. Having a platform means you have a responsibility to speak up and speak out. As a fashion & lifestyle blogger, I never thought that people wanted to hear my thoughts and opinions on social issues so I kept quiet. But going forward, I want to use my voice to not only share fashion & beauty, but to create awareness about things that matter. ❤️ #speakupspeakout #standtogether #standupforwhatyoubelieve #creatorsofcolor #influencersofcolor #naturalhair #curlyhair #curlscurlscurls #amplifymelanatedvoices #shareblackstories」6月28日 4時49分 - tadashishoji
