Since 1967, the @smithsonianfolklife festival has been a platform for sharing culture and celebrating community. This summer the tradition continues online—#BeyondTheMall—starting today through July 5.

Jang Ayala made this decorative tin plaque, featuring the Smithsonian sunburst logo, during the festival's 2015 Peru program. Ayala's work combines his father’s metalwork with his mother’s retablo (or devotional) painting, and each of his designs took on special meaning as the festival progressed. Here the hearts reflect the warm feelings he had for the festival, the birds stand for peace, and the flowers reflect the beauty of his home country in summer.
