He lived through the time of segregation, a time when our own government outright said POC weren’t worth as much as a white person. This isn’t ancient history. He served in the Army in WWII and volunteered to defend a country that didn’t see him as equal. He told me of segregated units, seeing that many white soldiers still refused to treat Black soldiers as humans even though they had come overseas and were willing to die for the world and their country. This country still didn’t believe my dad earned equality for his service, he still wasn’t even permitted to go into a restaurant and have a meal when he came home. My dad never told me any of the stories of the racism he lived with until I was an adult. I think he was both trying to shield me from it, always telling me that we were all equals and I could do anything, and I think he hoped the world would change and I would never know what he had to encounter. At some point he shared his life, to let me know what was still out there and to not let anyone tell me who I am. He had a rough life which made him a hard man, but he loved his family the best he could with what was left in his heart and I’ll always appreciate and treasure that. Love you dad, miss you every day. - Ed」6月22日 8時52分 - deerhoof
