When we were planning the fourth exhibition in the series with John for 2012, we approached Françoise Gilot to co-curate. She wasn’t interested in ‘curating,’ but she not only shared her insights into Picasso’s paintings, she lent us some of her own works from those years. It was a privilege to listen to her speak about being a painter, the concerns of the studio, and the life of an artist, about Picasso, Giacometti, Braque, and Matisse. After Picasso, Françoise went on to marry Dr. Jonas Salk, famous for developing the vaccine against polio. When I first met her, I said that it was quite the track record. She looked at me and replied, 'Well, lions lie with lions.' I said, 'Yes, ma’am.' She put me in my place!" —Michael Cary, Director, Gagosian Read more about the exhibition, “Picasso and Françoise Gilot: Paris–Vallauris 1943–1953," via the link in our bio. __________ #PabloPicasso #Gagosian (1) Françoise Gilot and John Richardson, 2012; (2, 3) Installation views, "Picasso and Françoise Gilot: Paris–Vallauris 1943–1953", Gagosian 980 Madison Avenue, New York, May 2–June 30, 2012.
