It’s not enough to just post a black tile. I know that. You know that. What questions are we asking ourselves? What have we uncovered in ourselves? What changes are we making?⠀

It became acutely clear to me that my belief system of how I show up in the world has existed through the whitest of lenses.⠀

I began peeling this lens back. I see my own inherent racism. Its messy and its uncomfortable and it should be.⠀

The way in which I am racist doesn’t play out in the commercially easily defined way of physical assault or vile, derogatory statements. No. My racism plays out in my white lens ignorance.⠀

By simply accepting what a white education did or didn’t teach me about Indigenous Australian culture or Black America. As an adult my racism plays out by not taking the initiative to educate myself on the lives of communities that look different to mine.⠀

It plays out by watching TV shows & not asking why there are very little to no black characters in them. What does that unconsciously reinforce? It reinforces my ‘normal’ white lens. Another green light to my white privilege. ( @brandonkgood posted a brilliant video on this, go & watch it. Watch ALL his videos.)⠀

I see very clearly the systemic injustice when it comes to women’s rights & I actively campaign for change on gender equality. What does this reveal? Well, it proves that I’m very capable of seeing & actively responding to injustice, but selectively... when it affects me directly. ⠀

That’s the privilege. That’s my ignorance.⠀

White privilege is engrained in me from birth & its my job to actively dismantle it within myself because it is at the core of my white lens.⠀

I stand for change. Not just a while-its-trending-change, but a lifetime dedicated to doing better, to actively standing with my fellow human beings. That change starts firstly within my self; listening to the black community, reading, self-educating, unlearning & excavating out the depths of an engrained white belief system.⠀

I am so profusely and heart openly sorry it has taken me til this time in history to stand as an ally. I am making changes. I am going to do better.⠀
