These names, along with so many others, are imprinted on our public consciousness, but somehow, not imprinted enough. Because if it was enough, it wouldn’t keep happening. The photograph above was taken at a Civil Rights demonstration in Nashville in 1964, but it feels like it could be now. We have a collective responsibility to honour the people named, and all black people, by not standing by in silence as we witness the injustices heaped upon them, because in silence, there’s complicity. Racism is abhorrent, and it permeates throughout many systems and institutions, sometimes loudly, and often in deep -seated, insidious ways, that need to be identified and brought to light, through education, conversation, witnessing, and reparations. It feels too little to feel outraged, to cry at the picture of a smiling father in a paper. What feels right is to stand in solidarity, to listen, to get educated, to write to congress men and women, to donate to ACLU and other Civil rights organisations, and come November the 3rd, if you’re a US citizen, to vote. And to keep reading, remembering, and saying those names, until they become a part of us. “Our lives begin to end the day we become silent about things that matter.” Martin Luther King Jr. RG @mssophiedahl !!
