"Red is my lucky color", Monsieur Dior wrote in his memoirs. Red was the barometer of his success as much as the symbol of his passion. He regarded it as "the color of life", the treasured shade that electrified each of his shows. 'Éclatant', 'Brûlant', 'Satan' and 'Braise' were some the names given to the reds that lit up his looks from 1947 onwards, including this 'Écarlate' afternoon dress. From the Autumn-Winter 1955-1956 haute couture collection, its feminine form is rendered in "Dior red" silk, the apogee of Parisian elegance.
