We were asked by Professor Hugh Montgomery, Professor of Intensive Care Medicine at University College London, to help create the Holdster as a safe and accessible way for ICU staff to carry their important belongings whilst on the front line during the Covid-19 pandemic. We donated the first shipment to ICU wards to trial in April. @thetimes have since generously come on board as the launch sponsor for a further 1500 Holdsters which will arrive in May. The Holdster is made from a wipeable and washable fabric to satisfy infection control, with harness-like straps for comfort and a host of pockets for belongings. The NHS Holdster prevents dropping items from pockets in scrubs and allows them to have what they need to hand. A small thing such as being able to carry their phone with them means they can keep in touch with their families as they work long shifts which can make a big difference to their well-being. (And we have also added a little ‘NHS heroes’ embroidered on the front.) The Intensive Care Society is the largest critical care charity in the UK and supports all intensive care professionals. It acts as the voice for intensive care and provides guidance, educational resources, support and advice to its members, patients and relatives.
