Thanks for allowing me to share Les!❤️ ・・・ Essie Mae (1916-1994), my paternal grandmother used to whisper-shout at 8-year-old me “Too big for your britches!” When I started college she got her quilting circle to hurry the finishing of a quilt to send to me in my dormitory; along with a jar of her homemade fig preserves. 💐In Mothers Days Past, I have felt gratitude, pride, love, and always the aspiration to be a better woman because of the women in these photos. Today is only different because my heartstrings are really pulling me to tears. I miss their touches, their skin smells, their admonishments, their encouragements, hearing them utter their trademark sayings, and more. 💐Swipe left⬅️ to see vintage photos of my maternal great-grandmother Mary Ezelle, her daughter Mary Elizabeth (b.1917), my mother Patricia Dayle (1940-2009). 💐The photo of me and my grandmother - the only one still alive at 102 - was taken when she was in her 90s and going blind. Dementia had yet to impact her ability to verbalize complete sentences, and when we were taking the photo, she asked me “Is my smile alright?” She gave me my first suitcase, my first classy wristwatch, my first classy black leather purse and liked to say “ You don’t have to be famous, you don’t have to be rich. If you can be a truly decent person, that is quite an accomplishment.” Although she can no longer hold conversations, she still knows how to grip my hand and give me little-bird kisses. The last time I was with her was in Detroit, Thanksgiving 2019. 💐My mother. A bold, vivacious, affectionate, and temperamental Aries. She took raising her three daughters seriously! She showed us what it meant to “go to bat!” for someone. An educator and entrepreneur, early on she introduced me to dance, music, books, and finger-painting. Need someone to champion your dreams? Pat was the woman to call.
