Kyoto used to be Japan’s capital. Referred to as “miyako,” it was presided over by elegant aristocrats until the period of warring states came and warlords took power. The capital was moved to Osaka and eventually to Tokyo, but people in Kyoto still somewhat refuse to accept these changes in their heart of hearts; they proudly believe that the country's cultural center still resides in Kyoto. We are renovating an old machiya-style row house for our store in tradition-abiding Kyoto, so we keep encountering electrical and structural difficulties and have to tackle one problem after another by hand. I have been commuting to Kyoto once a week, working on fine-tuning everything with Murata, and I can feel that we are getting there.
