SO YOU’VE BEEN PUBLICLY SHAMED?
This is the book I believe every internet citizen must read. I’ve been one of those citizens since, I’m not kidding, 7 years old. Over that time I’ve witnessed internet culture form and develop at an increasingly rapid rate.
Have you ever piled on? Cancelled someone? #whoeverisoverparty? While this book makes clear it’s not about excusing wrongdoing, it explores the very curious life-changing instances of perhaps a joke being taken a wrong way, and somebody losing their job as a consequence.
In particular I loved the parts exploring the ‘Right To Be Forgotten’ law, a regulation allowing people to strip their history from being indexed by search engines.
Ronson explores the services who offer this ability privately, by creating thousands of blogs and websites about a person, aiming to bury their past rather than erase it. I had no idea these kinds of services existed.
Overall it explores the theme of shame, and what it drives us to do.
