I know, there aren’t many artworks out there in which this kind of descriptive text unfolds. In art involving text such as language art, message art, or joke paintings, the sentences are supposed to be short and nuanced, making the viewer explore the relationship between the words and their visual impressions. Yet all I am doing here is to make you read my writing. This is one of my Baka Paintings. “Baka,” inscribed above, means “idiot.” You also see underneath it the inscription “Baku.” Baku is a legendary creature, the idea of which originated in China and traveled to Japan. It is said to sustain itself by eating people’s dreams—not as in dreams and hopes but nightmares. If you chant “I give this dream to Baku” twice after having a nightmare, you supposedly would never have that dream again. BAKA and BAKU: That’s all there is to it. Ha ha ha. I’m sorry. For the past ten years or so, I have continually been making this kind of explanatory paintings. Incidentally, this work was made in October, 2019. The popular music industry is in the midst of an unprecedented hip hop boom. When I was young, popular songs were mostly melodious, but these days, musicians self-deprecatingly sing about their own scandals and the industry inside stories make their ways into the lyrics. On Instagram and YouTube the amusing world in which reality and fiction are mixed up is disseminated, and these platforms are structured so that the more your posts are seen, the more you get advertising revenue. The climate is such that those who blatantly expose themselves on reality TVs and survive with their egos intact are praised.
