Our Center Director Chris Scolese retired from NASA at the end of July.
As a valuable leader in our community, he will be greatly missed.
Scolese joined Goddard in 1987 and has served in several roles at Goddard and the agency.
Before being named center director, Scolese was Goddard’s deputy director and assisted the director in overseeing the center. Scolese assumed his position as Goddard’s center director on March 5, 2012. He previously served as NASA associate administrator and NASA chief engineer at NASA Headquarters in Washington before returning to Goddard.
Scolese received several honors at NASA, including the NASA Distinguished Leadership Medal, Goddard Outstanding Leadership and two NASA Outstanding Leadership Medals. “Every decade, every year you can see something that Goddard has done that is absolutely fantastic,” Scolese said.
Scolese’s successor George Morrow agrees, and acknowledges Scolese as crucial in Goddard’s record-breaking science and engineering over the years. “He’s played a monumental role in Goddard’s success,” Morrow said, “and we are certainly grateful for the years he has put in.” Scolese’s impact on Goddard is indelible. The legacy of his directorship will last for years to come.
